Otoplasty is an operation frequently performed by plastic surgeons utilizing a variety of techniques and approaches to reshape congenital prominence of the ears, or to restore damaged ears. Each individual seeking Otoplasty is unique both in terms of the appearance of their ears and expectations for results following Otoplasty surgery. It is important that you discuss your expectations with Dr. Brantner before having surgery. The best candidates for this type of surgery are individuals who are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the appearance of their ears.
Although many children suffer ridicule from their peers due to this problem, it is nearly always considered "cosmetic" by insurance companies, and they will not cover it. It's good to know that something can be done about it, but if you think your child needs an otoplasty, we recommend that you wait until he or she feels the need, rather than insisting on doing the procedure sooner. Your child will let you know if and/or when they think it's a problem, and until they do, we don't recommend doing anything.
