Breast Augmentation

AUGMENTATION MAMMAPLASTY (Breast Augmentation) is a surgical procedure performed often by plastic surgeons for a number of reasons:

§         To enhance the body contour of a woman, who for personal reasons feels that her breast size is too small

§         To correct a loss in breast volume after pregnancy

§         To balance breast size, when a significant difference between size of the breasts exist

§         As a reconstructive technique for various conditions

§         Replacement of breast implants for medical or cosmetic reasons

The shape and size of the breasts prior to surgery will influence both the recommended treatment and the final results.  A woman’s breasts are not normally the same size or shape before surgery, and it is unlikely they will be completely symmetrical following augmentation.

There are several options available, including the type of implants and the surgical approach utilized to place the implants.  Implants can be either SALINE or SILICONE.  The type of implant will depend on the patient's preference and Dr. Brantner's expertise in helping determine which type will give the patient the best result.  Dr. Brantner normally uses the AXILLARY approach, which means he will make a small incision, approximately 1.5 - 2 inches long, in each arm pit.  The implants will be placed under the chest muscle through this incision.  If a patient is having a breast lift (Mastopexy) or another procedure which requires a different type of incision, the implants will be placed through that incision to avoid leaving unnecessary scars.
